Writing Center

It is important to point students who may struggle with writing toward Writing Center early on at the beginning of the semester. It is much easier to be proactive than reactive. The Writing Center helps teach students stronger habits in their writing skills. The Writing Center can help a student in any stage of their writing process. Typically, they will start with the basics with understanding of the assignment, fine tuning grammar, references (APA and MLA), understanding of thesis statement, having sources to support the thesis, and so forth. The Writing center is available when the Learning Resource Center and Rooney Library is open. Drop- in hours will vary upon semester due to tutor availability. All appointments take place in the Learning Resource Center Campus students should schedule appointments with The Writing Center at least 24 hours in advance. Students can schedule their appointment here: https://smwctutoring.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php The Writing Center operates a little differently for Woods Online students. A student and a writing tutor can meet synchronous and talk in real time or asynchronous where papers can be emailed. However, campus students are not encouraged to email papers to the Writing Center. If they would like to schedule an appointment virtually, that is fine. A student can email writingcenter@smwc.edu for questions and that email will go directly to Antonia Taylor. Antonia Taylor, Associate Director of Academic Services for Student Success, Senior Lecturer for Languages and Literature ATaylor2@smwc.edu Ext. 1167 Typically, writing tutors will meet with a student for 30 minutes, unless the student would prefer an hour. At that point, the student would need to request two appointments back-to-back.
