CAT Dog, I just told you. It does this in our sleep! DOG Mhm. Go to sleep. Maybe you can catch the demon in the act. How’s that?
(A wheezy laugh is heard from US. CAT spins around.) CAT
What was that?
DOG
I didn’t hear anything.
CAT That damned thing is up to something, I know it! DOG You’re out of your head. Go sleep. CAT You’re a fool. (To THE BEAST.) And I’m watching you, little rat!
(Disgusted, CAT exits. DOG snuggles in and dozes off. After a moment in the darkness, THE BEAST slowly looks over his shoulder. He then turns his head and looks over the other shoulder. A beat. He begins to rise, slowly, out of his cage. Lightning strikes and THE BEAST’s hideous visage is briefly revealed—all artsy and suchwhat, much like an old school horror film. He crosses offstage. A fridge is heard creaking open, the sounds of rustling, then voracious slurping, like the noise a vampire might make. After a moment the fridge closes and THE BEAST enters and crosses to the cage. After he settles, CAT enters with a book and sits in the armchair DSR. He opens to a bookmarked page and scans it.) CAT
Aha! I knew it!
(He looks up at DOG.) Hey, wake up! I’ve figured it out!
