We have become inured to massacre, a people transmogrified to Ignore widespread suffering. Yet this man is our modern day Cato, revealing Rome’s great sins of inaction and indifference to Monstrous, horrific suffering. Before he immolates, Aaron declares, “I will no longer be complicit in Genocide!” His act of divine violence forces us to face our own Complicity, to look into the dark corners of our soul. It makes us ask, ‘What would I have done during slavery or the Holocaust?’ Answer: you are doing it right now. From this shame, we can Turn away from his message or embrace it. But we cannot deny He reminds us of another radical who dared to preach humanity and Unconditional love, two thousand years ago. We usually ignore Him, too.
