since October 2022, and just registered for Reunion Weekend – even though it’s not our year! Last March, she traveled to Ireland and Germany with the highlight being the Oberammergau Passion Play. Debbie continues to support SMWC in many ways, as the Class of 1979 Class Agent, founder of the Eastern Illinois/Western Indiana Alumni Club, and frequent visitor to the SMWC Class of 1979 Facebook page. Christine “Chris” Miller Retseck (cretseck@gmail. com) and Bill are enjoying their days as a retired couple. They travel and celebrate life’s adventures which included a visit with Deborah “Debbie” Lary and Catherine “Cathy” Jacikas Fox , and a milestone birthday for Bill this year. Rebecca “Becky” Penquite Hemmer (bghemmer@ psci.net) and Greg reside in Santa Claus, Indiana. They enjoy spending time with their children and are over the moon as grandparents. Shirley Makowski McAlister (saemcalister@ yahoo.com) and her sister, Linda Makowski Squadroni ’78 , relished a quick trip to New York City in the fall 2022. Shirley holds the title of “grandma” and finds much pleasure in family time gatherings. During the week, Shirley enjoys volunteering her time in diverse activities within her local community of Mishawaka, Indiana. Susan “Sue” Kuehl (suekuehl623@gmail.com) has enjoyed a few short distance trips but is looking forward to trying out a new suitcase like Hermonie’s from Harry Potter, for long distance travel in the fall 2023. Sue follows healthy guidance to stay active while keeping busy with her two dogs and as a recent “great aunt”! Crafts and housework keep Sue busy – she will be ready for company to visit at any time in Vincennes, Indiana. Kathryn “Kathy” Kelly Proffitt (kproffitt@ consolidated.net) and John are both enjoying semi retired part-time employment. After 20 years in the news business, then as a Catholic Parish Secretary, Kathy is putting her Spanish to good use as a bi-lingual cashier at the Contractor Services Desk at a Big Box Store /The Home Depot in Mattoon, Illinois. John and Kathy enjoy being homebodies while tending to vegetable and flower gardens on their property. Life is good! Though far and near, Norma Marie Honiball (honiball@hotmail.com), Kathryn “Kathy” Jasinski (kejasinski@hotmail.com), and Julia Thompson Henry (jannehenry@gmail.com) continue to keep in touch. Kathy keeps in contact with many classmates and faculty/staff from SMWC. The girls organize visits and travel time together which includes an annual week-long stay back to The Woods. The visit in 2022 took place during the winter holiday break which was highlighted with a beautiful snowfall. Catherine “Cathy” Jacikas Fox (5slyfox1@msn. com) and Mike are doing well in southern Indiana. Since Cathy’s retirement in 2016, they enjoy time together while fixing up the house and experimenting with different cooking techniques and recipes. Their children are all grown and Mike loves spoiling their four grandchildren. Cathy and Mike remain active with ministries at Masses in Prince of Peace Church, Madison Indiana. Cathy enjoys keeping up with our classmates on social media. Margaret “Margi” Owen Miller (margi.miller@att. net) and Mike ran the gauntlets of Medicare related decisions throughout the last 12 months and are now set. They have been busy caring for Mike’s parents and settling things for the sale of their home, and moving them to a senior community center nearby. Margi was semi-retired in 2022, and was asked to come back to work again in January 2023. Mike retired in October 2022 and was recently asked to mentor the younger
sales teams. Retirement is soon to come! Therese Minich Gavin (tmgavin@aol.com) and Larry are the proud grandparents of four grandchildren. Granddaughter Reymarie Elizabeth Gavin-Helfrich has recently been added to the family roster. They are blessed to be able to spend time with her as she lives only two hours away from Lake Orion, Michigan. Therese plans to retire for the second time this summer and looks forward to spending more time with family and friends. Linda Lovellette McLeaish (kenwoodcottage@att. net) and Bob are enjoying the lifestyle of retirement and cherish family time with their children and grandchildren. They continue to travel everywhere … 2023 has plans for a visit to Hawaii and then back to their camper for another drive across the country – be prepared for unexpected company as the next stop may be in your neighborhood. Happy trails to you… and safe travels too! After a week-long vacation along the Florida Gulf Coast, Ellen Murphy (emurphygirl@sbcglobal.net) returned home to Missouri and decided to retire from a successful 40+ year career as a paralegal. She continues to putter around the house and be involved with selling real estate. Ellen enjoys time with family and reports that all are doing well. The annual “Woodsie” summer weekend get together with the Classes of ’78 and ’79 was another highlight for Ellen’s 2022. As for me, I still working as a high school counselor … still judging cheer/dance competitions … and still loving time with the family. Sundays are all about family, food, football and fun! The family is starting to grow by leaps and bounds as bridal showers, weddings and baby showers occupy the next 18 months – life is good! I enjoy keeping connected with the SMWC New Jersey alumnae most especially Madeleine Walsh Sullivan, Ph.D. ’65 and Lydia Ruiz Hull ’71 . I am a pediatrician, and I practiced in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where we’ve lived for 27 years. My husband, Edward, retired a couple of years ago after many years of working for the Catholic Church in various capacities. It’s nice to have time to travel and spend time with family, especially our four children, who are scattered about the country. Mary Roddy Hull : 2022 was eventful for our family. The girls both graduated from college (hooray, no more tuition checks). Connor and his girlfriend bought their first home, and Joe retired from Cal Trans after 36 years of service. It’s an exciting time! Mary Jeanne Schram Miller : My husband and I travelled to Ireland in July for a wedding and enjoyed the beauty of the country. We continue to split our time between our home in Sisters, Oregon and Butte Valley, California, to spend time with our daughter and son, respectively. One of my twin nieces is now experiencing The Woods and loving it! Can’t wait to see her get her ring in March 2023! Kathleen “Kathy” Wentland Lubeznik splits time between Indiana and Florida. She and Glenn have three grandsons. They enjoyed their youngest son’s October wedding. Kathy loved having Woodsie friends present. In July 2022, Kathy lost her 94-year old father. Her 93-year-old mother is well. Kathy
hopes for a good turnout for our 2025 Reunion. Kathleen “Kathy” Daugherty : I am happily retired! This allows me time to spend with family, especially my two granddaughters. Life is good! Susan “Sue” Sedlacek Wilson : Ray and I continue to spend our time cruising. Our favorite destination this year was the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao). We just arrived home from Mexico and the Cayman Islands. Our son, daughter-in-law and grandpuppy were able to make it to St. Louis, Missouri, for Christmas, but unfortunately, our daughter and her family didn’t make it in from Chicago. We were able to visit with them in January. Jean Faulkner Smith : Christine Devine and I met up in Baltimore, Ireland, in July. We got a photo standing in front of the pub/house where Christine’s maternal grandmother was born. In other news, LP and I continue to enjoy retirement. The best part is no alarm in the morning, traveling to new places and visiting our families when the mood hits us. Patricia “Patty” Hand Curley : I crossed off another bucket list item in June: I finally saw the Grand Canyon. Mary earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree last May. Colleen will get married in July, with the reception in O’Shaughnessy. This is my final year of teaching, so I am savoring the last of everything. Maria Vega Prado Monhaut : Traveled to Rome in April, Retired in May and got together with Karen Svendsen Werner and husband. My third grandchild was born in October (daughter’s), and my fourth was born in November (son’s). I traveled to the Holy Land in November. Spent Christmas and New Year’s in California with my fourth Grandbaby. Staying healthy is a priority after a heart attack and cancer. Overall, I’m well. As for me, things are about the same for us, and we are both still working. But a few things to look forward to in 2023: Planning on heading to Arkansas in April to celebrate my Dad’s 99th birthday (The first day of his 100th year, as he likes to say), taking our second sister’s trip to Seattle in March and just enjoying time with the grandkids. Michele “Shelly” Maher Aff (shelly.aff@gmail. com) has been traveling to see grandchildren: Evelyn, 3, and Archer, 1. She and her husband are retired and live outside Knoxville, Tennessee, and golf and boat daily. They have thoroughly enjoyed being on the Board of Trustees at SMWC. Here, they have bonded with a very special group of people. They are blessed to be included. Sherry Flanagan Adams (lakebluff5@gmail.com) After living 36 years in the same wonderful home in Lake Bluff, Illinois, they decided to make the move to warmer weather in Scottsdale, Arizona! They are close to her mom and stepfather, who, at 87 and 96, are aging gracefully! They keep busy running, hiking and pickleball! Life is good! Mary Wade Kiscaden (mkiscaden@yahoo.com) After 10 years in Richmond, Virginia, she is headed back to Winnetka, Illinois. Looking forward to being closer to their families. Brad and she are bracing for tearful goodbyes to their children: Sarah and James, as they will be staying in Charlottesville and Richmond, respectively. Nancy Payonk (napayonka@icloud.com) retired in August 2022.
