First Communion, grade school and high school graduation; five cancelled trips; five to six days each week swimming laps; 54 books read; cookies and casseroles baked and delivered; innumerable blessings and thanks given for good health and vaccine received! Love to all! Belén Capiel González acknowledges it has been a crazy year, but Jorge and she are fine. It has been three years since her heart ablation for A-Fib with no ongoing issues. Jorge is facing the same procedure. The grandkids are healthy; all have been face-to-face schooling with few exceptions. The oldest in her senior year of college at UCF. Their two children and spouses are doing great! Barbara “Barb” Brugnaux and Carl were lucky to have a week in St. Lucia before the pandemic hit. No other travel to report. Barb continues to work as a senior judge, although court is by Zoom. Carl keeps busy reading, playing Words with Friends and helping friends with electronic gadget issues. She is really tired of cooking, although she did start baking bread! Yung Hae Chung Lee pre-pandemic was working in retail but is now staying at home trying to keep busy. They celebrated 50 years of marriage. Her two grandchildren attend college at UNC, Chapel Hill. Her oldest daughter lives in LA with her husband and child. Their youngest son lives in Korea with his two kids. The Woods keeps giving fond memories being part of Class of 1970. Christine “Chris” Seelman Rochetti is still living in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Rick retired April 30 and they’re navigating the pandemic with summer golf and walks outside. They consider themselves lucky to have one son living in the area and the other son living in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is looking forward to having a safe Reunion in the near future. She loved the zoom visits. Carolyn Gallogly says: 2020: the year from hell. 2021: the year hell froze over! It’s been cold in SMW heartland. Zoom saved the year, relationships and sanity. It was the year she retired, and the year she became a grandmother. Lucy Tess O’Neill arrived in October and brought hope. Everything is quiet on Long Island. They can’t use their apartment C L A S S N O T E S in New York City, but is enjoying renewing relationships, and garden, which thrived. Jeanie Rieme Heller reports COVID has been less stressful for them. Her office has been in her home for more than 30 years, so she had no adjustment. She misses travel and meeting with friends — but that will come soon enough. She looks forward to celebrating with 1970 classmates when they can safely reschedule their 50th Reunion. Jacquelyn “Jackie” Keoughan says adjusting to forced laziness was hard. She has accomplished household tasks that had been postponed. The highlight was the arrival of my fourth grandchild, first grandson. James Clayton Spitz, born healthy in April. She has been Zoom teaching French for the University of DE and for Delaware Technical and Community College. Through technology she has been able to watch James grow. Steve and Anne Kayser Lannert are keeping warm and in good health in Evansville. They have unpacked from their move, but Anne is

still rearranging the house. They got the COVID immunization and are looking forward to seeing their grands in person. Three of the six will be celebrating golden birthdays this year. Zoom has been wonderful but misses warm hugs. Susan Dietz Zellers has family updates. Jennifer lost her husband, Jim, in October. Meghan and her husband, Kent, have two boys. Claire and her husband, Sergei, have two boys. Jim brought three children to our family. They are our bonus grandchildren. She hopes to see others, and all stay safe, healthy and strong. Karen Swartzlander Fountain has been riding out the pandemic at home. She has seen some family, and has connected through video chat. She is on the list to get an appointment for the vaccine. She is faring well. Her new knee is performing well. She never l at a loss for chores! She adores the fact that Publix and Costco takes her food. Karen has decided to resign as your class co- secretary. She said, “It’s been great fun to be in touch with you all, but after 25+ years, I’m ready to move on. I’ll be at Reunions when/if they happen and keep in touch via Onyx Anneau. But I’m lined up for three cruises beginning next April and ready to get my new knee and new hip out to see the world. Can you believe it? For me, the time just flew by. Just yesterday I was in Mr. Palacios’s 8 a.m. logic class (there is an oxymoron) and here I am, 71 years old, retired 18 years after 31 years of teaching, writing to more 71-year-olds with histories much like mine. This pandemic has changed all of us, but in some ways, we are very much the same…. Kathann Wyss Koehler is working at Xavier University as the Planned Giving Manager from home. She keeps up virtually with family and Cincinnati SMWC Lunch Bunch. Four of nine grandchildren are close and visit about every 4-6 weeks. She has checked on classmates. Sueanne “Suzie” Blazer Stokes in Kansas City, Katherine “Kathy” Uzdawinis Laham and Jena Worland Hartman in Indianapolis, Paula Connor Zembrodt in northern Kentucky and her “big sister,” Therese Connor Benken ’69 in Cincinnati are hanging in. Mary Jo Trainer Pazak writes life has changed not traveling. She and Red are enjoying retirement. Mary Jo attends a virtual Bible study, and she is on the Grand Canyon Young Readers Committee. She recommends books for 3-6 graders. Their sons their families are well. Jameson (5th grade), Paulson (3rd grade) and Morrison (kindergarten). She is looking forward to Reunion. Edna Hannon Wintermantel tells us she only traveled to see her kids. They all live near her in New York state. She has been helping her sister-in- law care for her terminally ill brother-in-law until his death. She says everyone is trying to stay safe and too many have died. She keeps in touch with Mary Getty , Valerie Woods ’72 and Mary Jane Welter ’72 . She hopes we can pull off Reunion. Margaret “Meg” Deisher writes from Arizona. She and her sister took their annual trip to the Outer Banks, North Carolina, before the outbreak of the coronavirus. Since then, they have been inside. During that time, Meg and her sister spent most of the last year as caretakers for their old friend, more like a sister. She cannot believe we are the “old girls” now. She is looking forward to an in-person Reunion. Giovanna “Vanna” Looney Gorham tells us that she and family are well. She has a new granddaughter, Miah. She babysits Savannah. She is “a hoot” and keeps Vanna busy. They stayed home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She and her sister enjoyed the aspens, explored St. Elmo and its cemetery. She and family explored Estes Park and The Stanley Hotel. She suffers from cabin fever. She reads a lot. She travels the U.S. and Europe via YouTube. Mary Add Wilson Baker reports before “lock down mode” she and Jim saw Tina Gnavi Collins and Dale in San Antonio in February 2020. She has talked to people more than she has in ages. Marjorie “Marnie” Luken , Monica Dell’Osso , Mary Ann Delehanty Latusek and Barbara “Barb” Weber Michael are doing well. She saw Barb in September when Jim and Greg’s fraternity brothers got together. She went to the groundbreaking of the new building at The Woods. Hopefully, we can see it at Reunion! Patricia “Patti” Williams Essig completed a Spiritual Direction program from Siena Retreat Center in Racine, Wisconsin. She would be honored to explore the Divine — pattiessig7@gmail. com. She and Steve were looking at condos with their son. She launched virtual yoga classes. Their grandchildren Maggie (11) and Patrick (9) are due to go back to school in January. Patti is praying they stay safe. Patti and Steve didn’t travel to Florida this year and didn’t see Mary Botti Greenberg . She and sister Patricia “Pat” Botti ‘72 are loving Naples, Florida. Barbara Jaspersen Hataway sends sad news. After years of failing health, she lost her husband, Cara. He brought much into her world for near 32 years of marriage. He gave her his four adult children, their spouses, 11 children and eight greatgrandchildren. Her life in Kansas is about these people. Barb kept in touch with Susan Midkiff Boehme and Marilynn Kinealy McGuire . She was hoping for our 50th Reunion. Margaret “Peggy” Baele Aronson says 2020 was a weird year. She fell in April and shattered her elbow. She is healing. In November, her husband had a minor stroke and lost some function of his
