Onyx Anneau Spring 2021

Linda Lovellette McLeaish (kenwoodcottage@ att.net) and husband, Bob, are enjoying and loving retirement. They have traveled throughout the country with their luxury camper and are planning another excursion after the travel bans are lifted. Linda takes many pictures of their travels and posts them with short stories on our SMWC Class of 1979 Facebook page. The relationships between the Class of 1978 and Class of 1979 continues to be connected by Ellen Murphy (emurphygirl@sbcglobal.net). Ellen communicates through USPS, email, phone and an organizer for mini-vacation destinations. Ellen, Nancy Hunter Miller (ejmiller4@charter.net) and Ann Hartman Stolte (ahstolte@gmail.com) join together with Kim Alexander ’78 , Catherine “Cathy” Nolan Balay ’78 , Susan Finley ’78 and Anne Walsh Walton ’78 . Mike and Catherine “Cathy” Jacikas Fox (5slyfox1@msn.com) reside in Madison, Indiana, and are busy with retirement and family activities. Their boys live locally with their families. Daughter, Christy, and son-in-law, Rob, have been honorably discharged from the army (thank you for your service). Cathy is grandma to four: Adaley (10), Oliver (8), Owen (7) and Allie (1). Adaley completed a report on Saint Mother Theodore Guerin and received an A+! Cathy is a retired educator and serves as the director of religious education at Prince of Peace parish. Shirley Makowski McAlister (saemcalister@ att.net) resides in Mishawaka, Indiana, and has a new family title of “grandma!” Her sister, Linda Makowski Squadroni ’78 , and her family live nearby so the sisters can visit often. Shirley finds much pleasure in volunteering her time in the community and is looking forward to returning “back to work” with the public soon. Costa Rica is home to Norma Marie Honiball (nmhoniball@hotmail.com) and family. The boys are all grown, the next generation has arrived, and Norma Marie keeps active with her grandchildren as much as possible. While many of us were buried under snow and ice in late January, Norma Marie was spending her days at the beach! Susan Dempsey Gresham (sgresham@smwc. edu) is at SMWC full-time as the director of the career development center. Susan was highlighted in the #WoodsGivingDay – 2021 YouTube video. Mary L. Coleman (maryc4479@aol.com) assists SMWC as a member of the Board of Trustees. Deborah K. Lary (dietitian@bsodhi.com) and Christine Miller Retseck (cretseck@gmail.com) continue as the Class Agents and happily report that #WoodsGivingDay was a tremendous success in 2021. Thank you all for your service to our wonderful alma mater – so very proud of you! The Class of 1979 connected via Zoom on Jan. 29, 2021. Classmates were connected and tiled like the Brady Bunch in order to see and speak with one another. A toast to the Class of 1979 began a two-hour Reunion meeting which was filled with fond memories. Many of our classmates came up in conversation – it was all good news! The evening was so much fun that another Zoom reunion gathering is planned for a summertime meeting in

Murphy, on Dec. 3, 2019. Siblings who leave us with sweet memories live forever in our hearts. Susan “Sue” Montgomery Miketo (smiketo@ aol.com) and family reside in Columbia Station, Ohio. Her journey over the last 41 years has been filled with many happy blessings…family, health, career, travel and friendships. Guess who has a new address? Magdalena Hennel (mthennel@aol.com) relocated from Newburgh, Indiana, to Avon, Ohio, to be near family. She now resides in Independent Living at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Avon, Ohio. Magdalena sends her best wishes to one and all. She enjoys keeping in touch with classmates through the Onyx Anneau magazine. Deborah “Debbie” K. Lary (dietitian@bsodhi. com) continues to work on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic as she provides services to patients in the dialysis center as a renal dietitian. Due to the pandemic, Debbie has not had the opportunity to participate in her annual worldwide travels. However, being at home initiated the adoption of a 1 ½ year-old Maltese Poodle named Marlo who is her joy. Leisa Utsler Anslinger (leisa.clf@gmail.com) and Steve purchased a travel trailer in September 2019 as a first step toward Steve’s retirement next year. The camper turned out to be a real gift, as they were able to be outdoors and self-contained. Leisa and Steve are now booking sites for 2021. Leisa had a few professional moments throughout the year, but camping was the highlight. It has been a crazy yet busy year for Kathryn “Kathy” Jasinski (kejasinski@hotmail.com) who returned to the Montessori School in August 2020 as a classroom teacher for “in-person” learning to 30 children. Kathy has a new home, and her mom is living with her. Kathy keeps in touch with many classmates and faculty from SMWC. She visits with Julia Thompson Henry (jannehenry@gmail.com) and Norma Marie Honiball (nmhoniball@hotmail. com). Christine “Chris” Miller Retseck (cretseck@ gmail.com) and Bill are happy, healthy and active with projects around their home and community. Chris is in her fourth year of retirement and loves it. She is patiently waiting for Bill to decide when he will retire. Chris keeps busy as an active volunteer to the local Hospice Artisans group. Chris and Cathy Nolin Taylor (ta4hay@gmail.com) keep in touch and visit. Chris sends her love. The numbers are rising…the third generation in the family of Pamela “Pam” Etling Devine (devine@lcss.org) totals 34 in 2021…and the fourth generation has arrived! Pam continues to teach, Tommy is in college and Matt remains in law enforcement. The Devine family returns to SMWC quite frequently when visiting family members in Terre Haute…especially Pam’s mom, Patricia Carbon Etling ’54 . The COVID-19 lockdown kept Susan “Suzie” Kuehl (suekuehl623@gmail.com) at home in Vincennes, Indiana, for the winter 2020…and again in 2021. Suzie keeps busy at home with chores, crafts and connecting with old SMWC friends. She hopes to do some traveling in the future and officially become a “snowbird” winter 2022.

2021. A special “shout out” from the Class of 1979 to Sarah Stultz Mahady ’05 , (sarah.mahady@smwc. edu), SMWC director of alumni relations. Sarah was able to send the latest happenings on SMWC campus with classmates for our Zoom reunion. Her input was appreciated in addition to the plans and videos for #WoodsGivingDay. Our Class Gift is growing for the next Reunion Weekend at SMWC in 2024. How lucky we are to have Sarah working so closely with all SMWC alumni! As for me, Judith Ann “Judy” Gilberti , (megaphonemaniac@aol.com) working as a high school counselor… judging at cheer/dance competitions…and loving spending time with the family…all in the virtual world! A professional highlight was being recognized as the “School Counselor of the County” in Monmouth County, New Jersey, for 2020. I enjoy keeping connected with the SMWC New Jersey alumnae Madeleine Walsh Sullivan, ’65, Ph.D. and Lydia Ruiz Hull ’71 . 2020 was a quiet and peaceful summer spent at home. Thank you for sharing your latest news and activities with all of us. It is an honor to serve as your class secretary and I look forward to many additional years of correspondence with you. May the year 2021 be filled with many blessings for you and your families. ’80 Catherine Ley Cornell 402 Cheetah Dr Columbia, MO 65202-3790 famcornell@yahoo.com We lost a dear classmate this year. They are enjoying the next chapter of their lives as empty nesters, after remodeling their home. Work continues on a book in honor of Cathy’s dad. They enjoying
