CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC UPDATE
Philanthropy and grants breathe new life into the 110-year-old Conservatory of Music. Through the generosity of more than 200 donors and grant partners such as the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and the Sisters of Providence Foley Fund, Saint Mary of-the-Woods College (SMWC) has surpassed the $500,000 goal for phase one of the Conservatory’s renovations. Work continues with projects in-progress on the facade, as well as the auditorium and other interior spaces. Many phase one projects were completed in 2022. The auditorium is a priority project within the Aspire Higher
Campaign. Donor support has provided restored seats, new carpet and aisle lighting, accessibility upgrades in multiple areas and a technology booth for stage lighting and sound. SMWC is proud of its partnership with Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Historic Preservation and Archeology (DHPA). With two matching grants from the DHPA, front step remediation began in December to address the crumbling side walls and eroding limestone. New and repaired limestone is scheduled to be installed in spring 2023. Future phases will include updated and expanded public restrooms adjacent to the auditorium to
improve accessibility, leaded glass dome restoration, tuckpointing, roof replacement, LED lighting upgrades, plaster and paint repairs, as well as classroom and rehearsal space upgrades including new furniture. The College community looks forward to celebrating a rededication of the auditorium in memory of Marie Brendan Harvey, SP, ’51 in 2023.
