Qualitative Methods in Research

This course provides an overview of how qualitative research is designed, and how data is collected, analyzed, and reported. Besides the analytical framework, this course considers the ethical dilemmas, and human subject approval required for this type of research. This course also introduces the student to software that aids in the analysis as well as ways to visualize information. Students examine published research studies and critically analyze and present the findings. Students will leave this course with the skills necessary to read, understand, and critique most professional journal articles using quantitative research methods. Students will work with existing datasets to apply analytical skills. Students will visualize their research to communicate to a variety of audiences including audiences who come from different backgrounds. Students will master presentation techniques that help the researcher tell a story from a poster show to keynote speaker. This course is the culmination of the dissertation introduction and will consider the key concepts for the literature review and the proposed methodology. Students will prepare and present a qualifying research introduction to their dissertation committee in this course. Students will be required to participate in several virtual meetings to work with their dissertation committee. Prerequisite includes all Ph.D. in Global Leadership program courses prior to the dissertation courses (GL 897, 898, and 899). This course is the culmination of the introduction, literature review, and methodology of the student’s dissertation. Upon completion of the first three chapters of the dissertation the student will prepare a dissertation proposal and virtually defend this proposal to their dissertation committee. Research Design Students will combine theory and practice by reviewing research designs for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches. Students will consider potential theoretical design for their dissertation and reflect on ethics in scholarly inquiry.
