SPRING-OA 2022
C L A S S N O T E S to Woods classmates and especially time with her daughter and grandchildren. Back home, time is spent with reading and Bridge, visiting family and friends and continuing the 20-year tradition of weekly family dinner. Juliet Muro Oeffinger joined Joyce Brown Pfaadt and Mary Ann Kelly Hellmann for a trip to Las Vegas, Nev. She had time to get a “new hip,” and host lots of friends to thoroughbred horse races at Keeneland. Then off to a girl’s trip to Chicago, Ill., when not cheering on her grandsons’ many athletic events. Elizabeth “Liddy” Greene Rodosky has fond memories of The Woods and is delighted to see the college keeping up with the times: going coed and adding new majors. Despite dealing with a cracked vertebra and experiencing three TIAs, Liddy conquers all with exercise and physical therapy, finding plenty of time for the grandchildren. Patrcia “Pat” Krizmis Bath reports that after 44 years with The Legal Aid Society of New York City, ending with Director of Communications, she is now writing the history of the organization and having a great time doing it. Pat is always and forever the J-Major! Her wonderful grandchildren keep her young. Victoria “Vicki” Hartke Bencze is not able to respond but her husband Dan shares that Vicki suffers from dementia and other neurological disorders stemming from the encephalitis she had 20 years ago. Dan reports that Vicki has fond memories of The Woods and mentions it often. Lynda Paschke Cox keeps up her piano skills on a daily basis and loves having ample time to read and knit. Lynda is delighted that work is being done on the Conservatory and the Auditorium will be named in honor of Sister Marie Brendan Harvey ’51 . She and Tony are looking forward to traveling in the future. Anne Coggins Humphrey loved having 13 for Thanksgiving, 15 for Christmas Eve (the WHOLE family), and 10 friends for New Year’s Eve, who even stayed past 10:00 p.m. She is still playing bridge, but the virus has caused her volunteer venues to cut back. Reading takes up any extra time. Carolyn Bossman Conniff and Jay are doing well even though Jay has developed Parkinson’s so his mobility is diminished. That doesn’t stop them from joining others to play bridge, and Carolyn also joins groups playing pinochle and canasta. Carolyn’s two brothers have retired close by so Carolyn sees them fairly often. Barbara “Babs” Reder, SP , keeps busy at Providence taking sisters to doctor appointments. She also serves on the SP Food Committee and the Investment Advisory Board as well as taking part in many of the liturgical ministries. A spring Reder sibling dinner in Cincinnati, Ohio, is in the offing. Mary Lynn Laufer and husband Gary take turns caring for each other! Gary, a cancer survivor, recently cared for Mary Lynn during a heart failure crisis, followed by aortic heart valve replacement. Mary Lynn hopes to get back to gardening, but still reads and has gotten back to playing the piano. Jane Rehorst Lobo took the metro to Los Angelos, Calif., every weekday for six years to care for her two grandchildren. With two sons and a daughter-in-law sharing her house, all is taken care of as Jane takes off on her travels to Baltimore, Md., D.C. and New Orleans, La,, with her daughter Mary Kay.
Margaret Ann Mathews O’Neill happily shares that her skin cancer situation has “officially” cleared up. She and Patrick continue to grow their herbs and will be selling rubs and dips. Doing the Farmers’ Markets gets them out! Trips for fun and family visiting are planned for New Orleans, La., and San Francisco, Calif. Frances “Fran” Froehlich explained that although her partner is experiencing an arthritic episode, she is being a real trooper. They’ve installed a stairlift to make things easier and look forward to celebrating Fran’s 80th birthday with a trip to Monhegan Island, Maine, joined by longtime friends coming from Utah. Karen Humphrey Deeter works part-time as a solid waste consultant. Although they live in the city, they have chickens and an outdoor garden that provided a harvest of sweet potatoes – and an indoor hydroponic garden. Their two dogs, a mini-Aussie and a husky mix are in training for competition. Beverly “Bev” Snyder Thompson helps with the Equestrian Therapy Program fundraisers, plays golf weekly, and loves family visiting with son Paul and family on the East Coast, Jill in New Orleans, La., accompanied by son Brett. She remembers Reunion celebrating Fran and Connie’s Awards, followed by the devastating news of PK’s death. Rebecca “Becky” Caufield Peloff enjoys her home in Clarksville, Ind, with her brother and sister-in-law “just down the street.” Daughter Beth and her husband living right across the river in Louisville, Ky., mastermind many a family get together. She and Juliet celebrated March 1st with a luncheon. Katharine Yang is now living in a New York City assisted living apartment! She moved to Queens close to her son in Manhattan and daughter in Philadelphia, Pa. Katharine takes advantage of the lectures available, the exercise classes and finds there are even TV programs in Chinese. Pauline Gattie Busby is retiring after 47 years of working for the Special Education Department of the South Bend Community School Corporation. A move to Chicago, Ill., will be taking place somewhere down the road as her daughter and son-in-law are UP-sizing with plans to have Pauline join them. Marco and I, Anne Longtine , spent January in Sun City, Ariz., happy to have sunshine and time for hikes in the White Tank Mountains. Back home, we drive to Indianapolis, Ind., to take in chamber music concerts. I give the library lots of business and take advantage of online Met Opera. The words of Gay Gallagher Scherrer provide the perfect ending of our Class Notes: “I continue to love The Woods as a gift from God and am always grateful for the friends I made in that beautiful space founded my Mother Theodore in 1840” ’65 Katherine Krider Satchwill 502 Helen St Kannapolis, NC 28083-3652 704-517-3756 KKSKatherine@hotmail.com “With all due respect to the tragic losses brought on by COVID, we have to smile,” suggested Nancy Hurrle Emmett when she responded to my request for news. She sent me a meme of a disheveled ‘elder Auntie’ declaring, “I’m not adding a year to my age. I didn’t use it!” Catherine “Cunns” Cunningham expressed concern for our exhaustion, sadness, a sense of “the world’s a mess” and yet offers an additional mindfully sobering quote from Abraham Lincoln, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed
ourselves.” Cunns also pointed out that these long years of no travel are the longest since infancy that she’s not taken a trip somewhere. Anne “Toni” Murphy reported “I have no news” but added, “At this stage in the pandemic, no news is good news. Everyone in my family is well. My only ‘out of routine’ stuff was the annual Beach Ladies trip to Cape Cod. This year all of us were able to make it.” Yes, vaccinated and boosted, I, Katherine “Kate” Krider Satchwill, still got a mild case. I cringe at all the arguments, applaud every caregiver, and will grieve the most for the rest of my blessed life, for those lives lost in isolation and loneliness. Mary “Peg” Smith Bodt reminded me that “The Woods is in my heart with fond memories and the gift of lifelong friends. Just a note,” she said, “to let you know that Jack and I are holding steady; still splitting our time between Michigan and Arizona. Our kids are scattered,” she added, “I’m grateful for the technology that makes it possible to stay in touch even when we can’t get there.” Peg reports that Barbara Roguski Mandal and Niall, Jack and she get together occasionally, has had conversations with Mary Elizabeth “Macbeth” McGrath , Madeleine Walsh Sullivan , and promises she’ll track down Elieen Janssens Nasif soon. Then she added a postscript, “I forgot to mention that we had a wonderful visit with Catherine “Cunns” Cunningham and Roz when we were in the SF Bay Area for Thanksgiving with our grandkids.” Barbara Roguski Mandal “got to Atlanta for the first time in 14 months to see family. Did they ever grow and change in the time! I made it twice more before feeling invincible. Niall had open-heart surgery, so I’m his willing caregiver until he feels strong enough to drive and stay by himself for a few days. It’s been a tough, slow recovery, but they say he’ll be better than new (well, better than most 78-year-olds) in a few months. The website (http:www.smwc1965/org) continues to be a source of support for us. In a class announcement, we learned that Mary “Sue” Miles Dahlgren’s daughter Carol died suddenly and quite unexpectedly. Just before I compiled our notes, I called Mary Helen Walker Clayton about Jim’s very serious infections and painful complications from neuropathy in his foot. Many answered her request for prayers. “We are praying a lot these days. And for so many,” she said. Jim is progressing, but it’s a tough battle. Hopefulness, attitudes of gratitude, extraordinary medical treatments and all those prayers are benchmarks of appreciated support and shared concerns for each other and our families.” Along with impressive news of the campus renovations, innovations and record enrollments, SMWC President, Dottie King, reported “Saint Mary- of-the-Woods College hosted its annual day of giving February 8, 2022, exceeding its goal…” Elizabeth “Betty” Borders McAndrews was one of our class volunteers and asked, “In your notes, could you thank our class for being such wonderful supporters of The Woods?” YES! Patricia “Pat” Pratka Womack , another Giving Day caller, added her enthusiasm for our class’s continuing generosity. “I had a terrific birthday celebration with Barb and Vern in Sun City, Ariz. Being iced in gave them plenty of time to catch up and work on a project. February is full of fun celebrations with three granddaughters’ birthdays and lots of other in-person events. So happy to be less restricted after two years. She also wrote, “ Barbara Martin Fossum and Vern visited us in Texas in November 2021 for four fantastic days. In her SMWC reflections comments,
