SPRING-OA 2022

Rich, did get in a few trips. In mid-October, they went to the Northern Italy, the Alps, and the Dolomites. In April 2022, they have a trip planned for Tuscany and Umbria. They spent three days with their daughter before Christmas. Their son is still living in Seattle, Wash. Mary Fran is planning to join the 75th birthday celebration at The Woods in May. Christine “Chris” Fleck Neva lives in Keizer, Ore., with husband Rich and son Peter. In October 2021, Chris and Rich had a quiet at home 50th wedding anniversary celebration. During the past two years they’ve survived a forest fire and a massive ice storm. Rich has developed Parkinson’s. Chris survived breast cancer 6 years ago, and currently has arthritis in the hips, and has asthma, and osteoporosis. But generally, she feels well and is doing physical therapy. Donna Eichmuller Liszewski took a great cruise with Mary Kay Campbell Watson and her husband Al and Donna’s sister Susan “Sue” Eichmuller Hamilton ’66, ’90G and her husband Wayne. They spent a week in the Caribbean on a specially planned cruise that featured Irish music. Donna traveled north from her Florida home to visit her 14 grandchildren and to attend the baptisms of her seven great- grandchildren. Donna and Mary Kay are planning on attending the 75th birthday celebration at The Woods. Mary Kay Campbell Watson described her Irish cruise as fabulous. They had a modern priest on board that celebrated Mass every day. She has been traveling to The Woods often as a member of the Board of Trustees. Mary Kay and husband Al are planning several weeks in Maine this summer. Joan Wylie Hall was in Charlottesville, Va., in September for a reunion of the five Hall siblings and their spouses. Her sister-in-law Colette Hall put Joan in email contact with Margaret McElroy ‘63 , a major supporter of #WoodsGivingDay. Three generations of Margaret’s family, dating to 1928, lived in Le Fer. In retirement, Joan continues to review books, often by women writers. She is happy that her four-year-old granddaughter Hannah loves books. Karen Erazmus McNeal and husband David are still teaching college classes as their “retirement” careers and are glad to have face-to-face classes instead of trying to teach remotely. Karen was pleased to accept the nomination for the Adjunct of the Year award. During their free time, they’ve enjoyed visits with their four grandchildren, Joseph, Matthew, David and Camille, children of Karleen McNeal, MD ‘92 and husband Erlandas. Karen and David have managed to get in a few cruises during the pandemic years. C L A S S N O T E S Adelaide “Ade” Riordan Keenen finally gathered with family in Mexico for her grandson’s wedding. Her son, Matthew, had been living in Singapore but was finally transferred to Hong Kong in August 2020. Like many of us she has not seen him since July of 2019. But things are looking up for Ade. Matthew has now been transferred to Sydney. For those who don’t know Australia has reopened its borders to double vaccinated tourists. So, there might be a trip to Australia for Adelaide in the future. We might catch up again; she is one of only a FEW classmates from the Class of 1970 to venture to Australia and catch up with me! Might now also be easier since they have sold the BIG house and have moved into an over 55 community and loving it. Mary Beth Usher reports the mask mandate in Illinois was lifted officially and is waiting to see what ’70 Karen Kelly Kiss 3 Highview Court VICTORIA 3216 Australia kkiss@iinet.net.au

happens. She spent most of the time with her family and found that fun and refreshing. Her great-nieces and nephews have brought her great joy. A catch-up with a few of our classmates last May saw the years just melt away as they talked for hours. It was just what we needed. Nothing like a mini Woodsie Reunion! Mary Burke Goss put a mathematical twist to her news. She is still happily married to Paul (52 years in June); still practicing law (43 years in May); still in a big old house (33 years) in the best small town in America, Washington, Ind. (46 years). Mary Teresa “Tris” Terhorst Atkinson and John have just celebrated 51 years in January. This last year they managed to meet up with their daughter Katie and family in Sandusky, Ohio. They took a National Park trip later in August and later had a great visit with their son, Chris in La Trobe, Penn., near their anniversary. He and wife Diane have two boys also. Martha Crane attended her son, Alfonso’s wedding. He was married in August in Seattle, Wash. Traveling to the Great Far West gave her a chance to hike Mt. Rainer and kayak Puget Sound. Luis married in December to a lovely girl. She made two trips to Spain for visits with daughter, Elena. COVID got Martha in December even though she had been triple vaccinated shots but thankfully, a very mild case. But now she is healthy, as is her family for which she is grateful. Marilyn Foley Stephen and Scott moved from Madison, Wis., to the Lansing, Mich., area nearly a year ago to be closer to family including one of their daughters and her young family. Her grandsons, Sullivan, 7, Graeme, 5, and Seamus, 3, are keeping them joyfully busy! One silver (gold?) lining of the pandemic has been reconnecting with several treasured friends from The Woods. “My thanks to Mary Beth Rennels Strasse l for facilitating the Zoom calls for our class. Marilyn can’t attend the Reunion, but I know we will all party like it’s 1970!” Christine “Chris” Seelman Rochetti reports on some degree of boredom. However, reports, she, her husband and their two sons did actually go to Maui this past October (Give me a little of that boredom!) They had to show evidence of vaccination cards wherever they went and of course, mask-wearing. “Rick retired in April of 2020 and we’ve been negotiating the pandemic and retirement! Thank God he loves to golf! Ha!” Chris also met up with Maureen Deaver Purcell and her beautiful daughter last fall. They had lunch and a quick visit before traveling on to meet relatives. Ann Stumpf Clem during this past year, despite people thinking the pandemic is over, Ann continues taking precautions. She wears her mask in all public gatherings whether it’s required or not. Ann has taken up the candidacy of the Providence Associates (a lay group - male, female and diversified religions). Her mentor is Denise Wilkinson, SP, ’68 . Denise was Superior for the SPs for ten years. Ann has continued to stay connected to her roommate Miyuki Matuzaki from Japan with emails one personal visit. Meghan Groeger DeVito is still taking it easy after COVID and other complications due to osteomyelitis. But she was fortunate to vacation in Maine last summer and finally visit with family. Pending surgeries will keep her away from our 50+2 reunion scheduled around that time. Her doctor suggests she “aims for her 55 reunion “ instead. Maureen Deaver Purcell main focus during the pandemic was writing with a group from the Indiana Writers Center, a series of essays about my brother’s illness (Frontotemperal Dementia) and accompanying reflections. The group of seven to eight wrote about everything from fantasy, fiction as well as memoirs. They

met twice a week via Zoom for three hours. All women. It was like late nights in the lounge in Le Fer. See you all in May! Karen Swartzlander Fountain is still living in Tennessee, still self-quarantining and recovering from her knee replacement. She has enjoyed slowing down and relaxing but so far but hasn’t seen much of her children. That’s a huge downer. But hoping for a brighter day any moment now! Karen has spent time downsizing, which is tricky. She, like others, is still not truly comfortable in large group settings and is yet to decide about Reunion 50+2 this year. Patricia “Pat” Kienzler Graham enjoyed a return trip to The Woods to play golf with Carmen Piasecki, Patricia “Patti” Lyons Connor and Susan “Sue” Mower in The Woods Golf Tournament to benefit the athletic programs. She loved seeing the campus and spending time with friends. Recent trips to Mexico (January) and Florida (February) were great but her pending March knee replacement will keep her closer to home. All is good with the Graham family. Jeanie Reime Heller attended the SMWC trustee reunion in October 2021 - and saw many friends and was blown away at all the new wonderful changes on campus. Jeanie found it reassuring to see SMWC thriving and under such amazing leadership. She has seen Susan “Sue” Mower several times, including going to the first SMWC golf tournament. Jeanie enjoyed the party and walked the golf course with Barbara Brugnaux , while the golfers played - great fun! Barbara “Barb” Brugnaux and husband Carl both had some health issues. Barb had back surgery at the end of October and Carl had gallbladder surgery after Christmas, but both are doing well. Barb opted to work another year as senior judge but got in a trip to Utah and New Mexico in October and to Mexico in February. That trip was their first international trip in over two years. They are grateful for their health and friends and families that have stayed healthy through the pandemic. Belén Capiel González and hubby in October celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and were surprised by their children, their spouses, their grandchildren and her brother from California and his family. It included a weekend in a suite and admission to Epcot and then Magic Kingdom where they had spent their honeymoon 50 years before. The spent Thanksgiving in the Georgia mountains and Christmas holidays in Puerto Rico. And lastly from Belen, “It was my honor to complete my first year on the SMWC Board of Trustees.” While COVID had dampened many activities, Nancy Voll Pietrangeli did manage a number of trips to The Woods including a trip for Reunion Weekend in May 2021. Attendees included Carmen Piasecki, Suzanne “Suzie” McCloud Elliott, Barbara Brugnaux and Patrice Borders McCarthy . Nancy is looking forward to our 50+2 Reunion and seeing everyone!!! Until then, stay safe and healthy! Noreen La Mere Lewis during Covid has happily reconnected with fellow English majors Mary Beth Rennels Strassel and Carolyn Gallogly through monthly poetry discussions via Zoom. She and Ray celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary twice: first in July, with their three children and in October with siblings. Best news of 2021: Ray survived cardiac arrest December 30 and, with skilled medical help and prayerful support, is returning to his former self. Marie Scanlon Anderson got through with a last- minute email. They sold their big house in Wallingford and are learning to cope with a 2B, 2B condo in nearby Swarthmore. Still giving away excess! Perhaps this is a fate awaiting many of us!
