Common Statistical Techniques

n Chapter 4, you will find a brief summary of the most common statistical techniques. Many of these summaries contain a video to help you understand and interpret the results; some even include how to write it up in your dissertation. It is important to understand the ideas behind the various techniques. As a researcher, you need to know how and when to use them. Try understanding the simpler techniques first, so you can grasp the more sophisticated techniques. Videos may demonstrate either SPSS, JMP, or Excel. Make sure that you focus on how to interpret and communicate the results. To choose the statistical technique, start with these questions: I
• Question type: estimation or hypothesis testing? • Study type: sample data or experimental data? • Type of data: one variable or two? Categorical or numerical? • Number of samples or treatments: how many?
