This design is NOT horrible – the graph is ordered from largest to smallest. The two key observations are tied visually (through a line) to what you are meant to look at (the hypothesis). But that’s where the good stuff ends. Here are the issues: 1) The title is too large – some of the information could be included in the introduction of the graph. 2) Several things are repeated – the percentage at the end of the bar and in the axis, the choice of 3 options. 3) Lines go through the percentages or lines don’t connect.

4) Grid lines are used and you don’t need them. 5) The legend tells you nothing. You don’t need it. 6) No date found – when was this survey completed? 7) Clutter and key observations overwhelm the graph. 8) Formatted with borders is somewhat distracting.

These eight items don’t even consider the Gestalt principles!

So how could we revise this visual? Let’s look at the revised illustration and as you review it, consider the Gestalt principles that are part of the new design.
