Long-term memory Does our audience leave with our main points lodged in long-term memory, or does our presentation get dumped out of short-term memory to oblivion ? According to Vora (2019), “Information processed through visuals and images is believed to enter the brain’s long- term memory… thus increasing the brain’s power to recall and retain information that was absorbed through visuals” (p.150).

Magic The storyteller doesn’t decide which chart type to use. The data decides . (Vora, 2019, p. 152)

According to Knaflic (2015), “long -term memory is the aggregate of visual and verbal memory, which act differently. Verbal memory is accessed by a neural net, where the path becomes important for being able to recognize recall. Visual memory, on the other hand, functions with specialized structures” (p. 97). It’ s all about the triggers. For example, I took a wonderful trip to France and Italy in 2019. If you were presenting and you included a picture of the Eiffel Tower, I’d be flo oded with feelings, and get the concept of how the lighting of the tower at night makes it magical. So as a presenter, you’ve combined visual and verbal cues, and this combination will trigger the formation of long-term memories.

At this point, you may be struggling and asking – which visual should I use to present my data? Vora (2019) states, “The storyteller doesn’t decide which chart type to use…The data decides” (p. 152). And this doesn’t just apply to charts. It applies to any type of visual we use. What visual tells the story the best.
