The real challenge for parents is knowing when and how to help. Helicoptering has also been referred to “snow plowing” meaning that you can clear the way for your student by solving their problems for them. Students can learn to succeed on their own with gentle nudges and guidance. Encouraging them to find solutions and problem solve on their own will motivate them to greater success in their educational experience and beyond.

Providing autonomy and independence will ultimately help students to continue to grow into adulthood and develop problem-solving and life skills. This will help to decrease burnout and reduce the pressures of college life.
