Campus Counseling
An early alert can be sent out if you feel a student is in mental health distress. Those will be sent to the Campus Counselor, as well as anyone else who may need the information. The most common issues that students have problems with are anxiety, depression, and stress management. The best way to support a student who confides in you is listening to them, not being judgmental, and referring them to counseling by walking with them to the counseling center. Counseling at SMWC is free for students and they can schedule an appointment online through this link: Students sometimes worry about confidentially in counseling. Counseling is 100% confidential, unless there is threat of the student harming themselves or someone else. As long as the door is open, the Campus Counselor is available. However, the preference is by appointment, email, call, or scheduling through the online link. If the door is closed, send the Campus Counselor an email as long as the student is not in distress. Of course, there may be situations that come up when the Campus Counselor is not available. Please stay with the student and find someone who may be able to assist you. Students can have standing appointments with the Campus Counselor and if needed, they can refer a student to someone in the community that can help assist. TimelyCare is a virtual health and well-being platform that is available 24/7 for SMWC students. There is no cost. Students can download the app or go to www.timelycare.com/smwc to access care. The provider can prescribe medicine if appropriate and offers a wide range of support. The Campus Counselor can refer a student for psychiatry through TimelyCare. If a student would like to schedule standing appointments with someone from TimelyCare, they have 12 visits a year. Please refer to the two PDF’s for TimelyCare if you need more information. Please find in the handbook the Distress Flow Chart and the Community Resource Guide. These are helpful when trying to identify if a student is in distress and community resources such as food pantries, soup kitchen schedules, shelter, and clothing/hygiene resources. Sometimes, a student may express general concerns about their roommate. Encourage the student to speak with their resident assistant and then the residence assistant communicates with the Campus Counselor as needed.
