OA-Spring 2023
and sends best wishes to all. Has only fond memories of The Woods. Lynn Moore Delehanty (deledude2@gmail.com) and Tim’s busy lives in The Villages include pickleball lessons, golf, cardmaking and cookie decorating. The couple toured Iceland this year and travel regularly to California to visit family. Lynn enjoyed celebrating milestone birthdays with SMWC friends in Savannah. In Naperville, Illinois, Arlene “Zipp” Margevich Hogan (zippsmw@sbcglobal.net) and Mike were preparing for Mike’s upcoming surgery. Zipp still works in downtown Chicago and loves maintaining her usual routine. She is looking forward to the Reunion and is planning to go early to get everyone seats at The Bally. For Caroline Myss (carolinemyss@gmail.com), COVID meant that she could no longer teach internationally or see cherished friends across the globe, and she missed both. However, Carol and her business partner in CMED developed and expanded worldwide class offerings that help people navigate life in these chaotic times. Way to go! So fun to hear from Barbara Murrow Suarez (bjams1951@gmail.com). When she wrote, she was in San Diego, California, having a wonderful time with Joyce McDade White ’73 . Mary Jo “Jo” Thornley Cox (jothornleycox@ hotmail.com) is “steeped in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS),” leading children’s sessions and leading adult certification courses across the Midwest and Canada. She and Jody see granddaughter Lydia regularly and plan to visit Montreal and Washington, DC this summer. Travelers Cheryl Erazmus Freeman (soomantha@ gmail.com) and Dave and their entire family celebrated her 70th birthday cruising to Alaska. Other recent destinations include the Caribbean, South America, Antarctica, and Hawaii (plus a trip to Savannah with Woodsie pals). Busy Cheryl, an SMWC Alumni Board Member, looks forward to our Reunion. With six grandchildren, there is never a dull moment for Debra “Debbie” Noe Johanningsmeier (djnoe@ mac.com) and Jim. Lots of fun, sports and other activities. Last year, Debbie enjoyed her “50 plus two” high school reunion (delayed due to COVID) and is looking forward to our 50th in 2024. Our condolences to Victoria “Vicki” Olzawski Robinson (vlrobba@yahoo.com) who lost her father in December of 2022. Her mom, Lois Patton Olzawski ’49 , is 95 and doing well. Vicki and husband Gary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. Congrats! A highlight of Colleen Dominik Schultz’s (Colleen52@comcast.net) year was her 70th birthday celebration at Disney World with the whole family --- “a great way to celebrate a new decade.” Colleen also generates fun for their Del Webb community as chair of the social committee. Marie Stein Giancatarino (marielgcat@gmail. com) and Anthony are busy with their five grands and very active in their parish. Anthony serves on the Parish Council, and Marie on the school’s Advisory Board. In addition, they conduct the Prayer Ministry at a local senior home. Marie wishes God’s peace to all. Barbara Reidy Maitland (raccoons333@gmail. com) sends greetings and hopes everyone is planning to come to our 50th Reunion. She is enjoying life and all the time she spends with her granddaughters… sleepovers are a favorite. Condolences to Helene “Lene” Scully Block (leneblock@sbcglobal.net), whose mother, Catherine Scully, died in 2022 at the age of 100. Also, congratulations, as her daughter Alia is getting married in March. Lene still works as a nanny and is also
looking forward to seeing everyone at our 50th. I was glad to say that all is good at our house. As usual, Tom and I are still working, travelling when we can and having fun with their five grandsons under age six (and, of course, our actual “kids”). “Thanks for writing ---see you at the Reunion!” ’75 Lizabeth “Beth” Rybinski Haynes 11725 E 100 N Sheridan, IN 46069-9028 (317) 370-6861 haynes.beth97@gmail.com Tanya Zaylor Ashinhurst reports that she has yet to retire. She works remotely, even though her boss would like her in the office. The group she has worked for 20+ years is amazing and keeps challenging her which is why she still works. She hopes to see everyone at the 2025 Reunion. Kathy Finley Olson notes that her husband is undergoing a new treatment for his cancer which seems to be working. For this, they are extremely grateful. She is working part-time at her old school, which is just enough to keep her busy. She’s enjoying semiretirement with family and friends. Nancy Streb lives in West Palm Beach, Florida, and finally retired this past year. She tried moving back North, but after eight months, she couldn’t tolerate the gloom of winter. Nancy enjoys going to the beach, running, kayaking and other outdoor activities year round. Catherine “Cate” Bradley still resides in her small mountain town in Silver City, New Mexico. She almost fell for the crush of turning 70 this year, then realized it was a trick! Who knows what we can shift and affect if we feel like it? Cate sends peace and light. Mary Hogan Weber states that all is well in Mattoon, Illinois! Her husband retired last fall, and they had more time to travel, especially to see grandkids. She keeps busy with book club, Kiwanis Club and other volunteer projects. She is looking forward to trips to Florida and a cruise to the Eastern Seaboard. Kathleen “Kate” Angelicchio Barth has learned to play Bridge since her retirement, and it keeps her brain on its toes. They have no grands at this time and probably won’t. She and Mike have resumed traveling since the pandemic. She hopes this note finds everyone well. Beth McElhone retired and returned when the person who replaced her left with little advanced notice. She retired again and, some months later, took another job at a new parish. She states that she is apparently not very good at retirement and will try again in November 2023! Elizabeth “Libby” Maher fell down garage steps, broke her ankle, and is on the mend. She and her sister are taking a big trip out West in May, and once finished, she will only have Alaska to check off her list of States. In July, she is heading to Italy with her niece. Sarah Snelson Armstrong retired from her full-time job and now has two part-time jobs! She is doing quilt shows and consumer for Bernina and working for a thread company. Let Sarah know when you are in the Twin Cities. Susan “Sue” Homan is still teaching and travels wherever the USAF is sending her daughter’s family. Emily is currently in Hawaii, which was wonderful to visit. Her sons are in Florida, one a teacher/coach in Miami and the other a firefighter/paramedic in Tampa. If you are in the Tampa area, contact Sue at Woodsie75@aol.com. Ann Heckler Fetzer reports that 2022 brought great joy, profound loss and new realities. A seventh grandchild was welcomed, and her stepson, Kenny,
passed away. She and Ken celebrated their 21st anniversary! Ken was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and they are starting a new chapter in their love story. They are doing well as they are ‘Fetzer Strong’. Mary Fisher Doerflein states that after returning from doing aid work and teaching at a university in Thailand, she quickly “unretired” to be a sacristan at her church. Ann also welcomed granddaughter Avery, born on March 22, 2022, and her father is a veteran of Camp at The Woods! Joyce Thatcher has a wedding in her future! Her daughter, Camille, whom she adopted from Vietnam, was recently engaged. I have retired for the third time from teaching and have turned down requests to return to the classroom. The teacher shortage is real! Wayne and I are currently remodeling and updating the home we have been in for 37 years, and it has been a pain and a joy! ’76 Nancy Von der Schmidt Primus 142 John Pott Dr Williamsburg, VA 23188-6333 (518) 796-5892 nmprimus@yahoo.com Holly Hilton D’Amour and Rich love their home on the French Broad River in Asheville, North Carolina. She and John look forward to brighter skies and warmer temps in Florida and plans to visit her youngest, Rob and wife in Cape Cod. Jane Ternes Francis loves the St. Louis area.
