Mary Jane Kessler McCain spent time re- reading favorite books—something heard from lots of folks—and praying for family and friends. Lori Harris Strawn sent a humorous, grammatically perfect email in a beautiful Helvetica Neue font. She kind of enjoyed The Great Shutdown of 2020. After a feverish wallow in The Great British Baking Show, she summoned her inner fortitude...and went back to bed. “Plans for 2021 include...something. Probably.” Back from Senegal, Carleen Messina is now taking care of veterans at the VA in Bedford, New Hampshire. In April 2020, she graduated from the US Air Force School of Aerospace with training as a Flight Surgeon for the 158th Fighter Wing, and she is a Lieutenant Colonel. I’m partially plagiarizing Maria Price’s letter by sharing things I said in this past year that weren’t on my Life Bingo Card: What is that Viking doing in the Capitol? Are you Zooming to church? I’m so excited to get my shot! Ugh, going back to the car for my mask! 2021, do better! C L A S S N O T E S Jennifer La Civita and her loving partner, Enrico, are happy and healthy in Plainfield, Illinois. She will soon be a Nana as her daughter Emily Rose and Emily’s husband are having a baby in April. Eric, Jennifer’s son is looking forward to being a Funcle (fun uncle). Sue Ann Hillan Langdon completed her doctorate of nursing practice this fall and continues to practice as a family nurse practitioner in Southern Indiana. Sue is also the owner of The Derma Bar, which is a thriving Medical Spa in Madison, Indiana. Brenda McCoy Hoodlebrink lost her youngest son (23) to cancer after a 10-year battle in March 2020. Planning her oldest son’s wedding keeps her busy. Daughter, Aimee is getting her masters in accounting at Ball State. Daughter, Erin is working in Canada for a few months for General Mills. Catherine “Cathy” Schueth Thomas and her husband Bill celebrate 33 years of marriage this year and welcome their second grandchild. Cathy serves on the alumni board and welcomes ALL alumni to meet her on campus! You are such an intricate part of our history! Margaret “Peggy” McCormick Platz and Tony reside in Cincinnati, Ohio. Youngest child Erin enters college in the fall. Peggy continues work at Saint Ursula Academy as coordinator of community service learning, serves on the SMWC Alumni Board of Directors and is halfway finished with her MLD from The Woods. Veronica “Roni” O’Connor Kindley and Mike checked off a few excellent boxes in 2020! They moved into their forever home in April and welcomed their first grandchild in May. Adeline Grace lights up everything the world tries to darken. Susan Albrecht Sivore is so over COVID — cramping her social life! Dayton in Ohio, senior and a sophomore. Two at local Catholic high school, junior and a freshman. Still madly in love with Vic — 29 years and he puts up with her shenanigans! Mary Alice Cardis Clevenger had two trips to SMWC to visit her aunt, Sr. Alice Ann Rhinesmith ’60. Enjoying the snowy winter in east central PA. She has been enjoying Zoom events with fellow Woodsies! Kristine Binder continues to teach in Chicago. She is also a business owner who recently became certified as a life coach specializing in women’s empowerment. Her biggest accomplishment, her five kids, have become amazing young adults that play a mean game of scrabble! Nelleke Knarr continues to relish the beauty of Oregon with her spouse Craig, except for the wildfires and ice storms! Daughter Emily got an exciting job at SpaceX and Annie is doing well in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hoping this year brings some return to more in-person visiting and recreation! Nancy Watt Miller and husband Keith visited Las Vegas in February 2020 and saw two exceptional concerts: Aerosmith and Van Morrison. Son Blake is finishing an accelerated master’s degree in computer science at Indiana University in May 2021. Two daughters finished college and are living and working in Indianapolis. Greetings to and from the Class of 1989! Karen Aeschliman Hurley joined The National Alumni Board in Fall 2020, bringing years of experience in fundraising and a passion for service to the College. Congratulations, and welcome, Karen! I will be rolling off the Board in May after six wonderful years serving SMWC. Michelle De la Rosa-Olson’s family spent a week in Las Vegas when their cruise was cancelled just prior to COVID. She and Russ work from home. Daughter Veronica is a 2nd year physical therapy grad student. Daughter Victoria earned her business Windle’s husband, Roger, lost his battle with colon cancer at the end of August 2020. She continues to teach in central Indiana, and has been a great resource to me when I have questions about the field of special education. My husband and I brought a third dog home, and three Jack Russell mixes are keeping us busy. We’re both blessed to be able to work from home during the COVID crisis, but the dogs are going to be confused when we go back to the office! My big news of the last year or so is that I have become engaged and Trevor and I are planning a wedding for December 2021. I am still in the Chicago area and still enjoy doing Home Healthcare Physical Therapy. It has definitely been a challenging year with work and not being able to see my family in Indiana very much. Carole Price continues to support pro-life efforts in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. She feels that, if all of her efforts save the life of one child and save one young mother from a life of sorrow and regret, it will have been worth all it took to bring this about. Julie Jerger Weinzapfel has been working from home, still with the University of Southern Indiana. She and Greg celebrated 20 years of marriage and the girls are doing well in school, despite all the difficulties of this year. Sophie is a junior and Clara is a sophomore at Mater Dei Catholic High School and both enjoy being on the tennis team. Sharon Langworthy DesHotels reports that she is looking for new work due to the COVID-19 related slowdown in commercial real estate. She is optimistic despite the challenges! Carolyn Alexander Nelson celebrated 25 years with the State of Illinois in August 2020. Due to COVID she is working from home and she remodeled a room in her basement for her brand new office! She is busy helping Josh and Maddie plan their September wedding and is thankful her family has stayed healthy during COVID. She misses everyone and was very sad COVID canceled the 30-year reunion. Jennifer Lee Miller says she and Brian celebrated 30 years of marriage in July and their grand anniversary trip was thwarted by quarantine and COVID. They moved their son Blake out, and regained Brice for a few months. They are now empty nesters along with their dog Duke, who has definitely benefited from more frequent and extra- long walks during the pandemic. Jamie Hunt Kauff and George moved back from Arizona to Indiana to live in and remodel her childhood home. She will be neighbors with her Mom and Dad. They have two new granddaughters, Gracelynn in February and Blair in June for a total of 4. Jamie is currently retired due to disabilities. They are enjoying being back with family and friends after being out West for a year. Kelley Reichert Ross and Bob have had a big year in 2020 with many changes. Bob quit being a high school principal and works in insurance. Kelley switched from classroom to teaching for Pearson Online & Blended Learning. After 20 plus years, they moved to the Fishers/Indy area, close to their oldest daughter and husband. Their youngest is a junior at Butler University and will be applying for PT school.
