Recoding : Questions that are negative, require “recoding” and fortunately SPSS has an easy process to recode the data. Never, change the original data before entering it into your statistical software package! All statistical software packages contain a way to recode variables. If you review page 112 in Adams and McGuire, the instructions indicate how these would be recoded. Essentially 1= 5, 2 = 4, 3 = 3, 4 = 2, and 5 = 1. Thank goodness for statistical software. How to recode in SPSS The responses of the participants from the Global Warming Questionnaire was entered into SPSS as shown below. The icon that looks like a ruler means it is scale data, and the three bubbles (Gender) is nominal.

Step 1 – Enter data into SPSS In SPSS version 27, I typed the data shown on page 111 for the participants.

Table 21: Global Warming Practice Set entered into SPSS Version 27

Step 2 – Recode Questions 3 and 4 1) In the menu, choose Transform > Recode into Different variables 2) At the Pop-up screen, click on Q3 (the variable you wish to recode) 3) Output Variable name – add an R for “recoding”. For Output variable label – indicate Recoded and question with short-cut reminder, for me GW was global warming.
