Dot Plots Explained Dot plots is the first step in visualizing the distribution of data. In a dot plot, you have one dot on the number line for each individual piece of data. Then you stack them on top if you have a duplicate data plot.

Here is the data representing scores on a 10-point quiz.

Excel does not have the functionality to do a simple dot plot easily without doing counts and manipulating bar charts with circle images. Therefore, what I've shown you is how to do a simple dot plot in SPSS.

1) I entered the raw data into one column 2) I right-clicked and named the data “ quiz ” instead of leaving it "var" 3) Graphs> Chart Builder (may need to say OK for it to scan the data) 4) Choose scatter/dot
