In May, I spent time with the Yunkers before and after our Reunion. In December we had a COVID delayed wedding in Atlanta, Ga. It offered a chance to barge in on Gail McMillin Newman and Dave for a few days. Reunion 2021 was a blast! It was a good walk down memory lane. The countdown to our 50th Reunion has begun! December 2021. He has retired and I am getting used to him being home all the time. We are loving living in Williamsburg, Va., and are starting to get involved in the community where we live. Catherine “Cathy” Nolan Balay had an eventful year in spite of COVID. Two of her daughters married in beautiful, but small ceremonies. Her beloved mother Margaret Burke Nolan ’50 , died in October, but the silver lining was two of Cathy’s favorite Woodsies— Margaret “Kim” Alexander and Susan Finley — came to the funeral. Mary Catherine Doyle retired in June 2020 after 42 years in the classroom. She’s been doing what she loves: gardening, crocheting, and playing guitar. “Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.” —John Lennon Welcome Spring! Let us welcome this blossoming and colorful season with unique beauty and open hearts for rekindled friendships. The last two years have been incredibly unique for all of us while living through a global pandemic. We can certainly agree that “it has been the best of times ... and the worst of times” to say the least. However, the year 2022 has brought two milestone celebrations for the members of the Class of 1979 – it is the year of reaching the ripe old (retirement) age of 65 … and the 100th anniversary of celebrating our beloved Woods Ring. As the planning of our college Reunion at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College becomes closer, we think about the fun and memorable times we all shared in 1975-1979. In just two short years (2024) we will return to our college home and reunite to celebrate our 45th Reunion weekend. It is almost time to meet again … so bring out those photo albums and scrapbooks of memories and let’s catch up with one another! It is with much sadness that we learn of the passing of Janice Temborius Clough ’51 , mother of Kimberly Clough Baker on July 20, 2021. Sending thoughts of peace to soothe you, prayers to hold you, and love to comfort you. We send heartfelt sympathy and prayers to Pamela Etling Devine and her family on the sudden loss of her husband, Matthew F. Devine, on December 25, 2021. May the memories of joy and happiness shared together continue to comfort all. #WoodsGivingDay was a success in 2022! Class Agents, Deborah “Debbie” K. Lary (dlary@ danvilledialysis.com) and Christine “Chris” Miller Retseck (cretseck@gmail.com) were very thankful for your generous contributions and support this year. The Class of 1979 increased annual donations and “socked” it to the Woods Fund. Hopefully, your personal SMWC gift socks displayed a new fashion statement while keeping your feet warm and toasty throughout the winter months. Leisa Utsler Anslinger (leisaanslinger@me.com) has been as a member of the pastoral planning core team that is managing a significant reconfiguration of the parishes of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Implementation will begin on July 1, 2022, which is about a month before Steve and Leisa retire to Nashville, Tenn. Leisa will continue to write and coach parishes and diocesan staff in the future. The highlight of 2021 was a steady pace of camping trips and time with family. Deborah “Debbie” K. Lary resides in Westville, Ill., and visits SMWC often. During her last campus visit she bumped into Pamela Etling Devine and Judith Higgins Price . Debbie enjoys taking pictures throughout the campus to keep our classmates up to date with The Woods. She is excited to be planning two trips to Europe in 2022 – Ireland in March and Germany in September. The Oberammergau Passion Play which has been rescheduled from 2020 has been on Debbie’s bucket list. Catherine “Cathy” Jacikas Fox (5slyfox1@msn. com) and Mike are doing well. Cathy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2021 and is coping day by day. It is mainly affecting her feet and legs, but Cathy is a good patient and remains very positive. Cathy and Mike continue with ministries at Masses in Prince of Peace Church. Cathy recently retired (again) after serving seven years as the Director of Religious Education. Cathy enjoys keeping up with our classmates on social media. Gail P. Size (inulta@msn.com) and husband, John Santopadre, moved to a 55+ community on the east side of Tucson, Ariz. Life has been much better

and for so many precious memories. Her daughter, Courtney Minor Moore’07, is also grateful for her Woods experience. Cynthia Noe and Charles feel fortunate to be in upstate New York throughout the pandemic operating their brewery, The Roaring 20s. The Noe-Grices are well and await the normalcy of travel, seeing friends ( Jill Spooner ) and family ( Debra “Debbie” Noe Johanningsmeier ‘74 ), and news about daughter Kathryn’s graduate school applications. Donna Sullivan Polky and Ken retired in September 2019. They traveled to Ireland, Chicago, Ill., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Michigan—then spent the spring getting their home of 35 years ready. It sold in six days! They’ve settled in Little River, S.C. They love retirement and hit the beach every day. Paula-Marie Read is well and moved to Portland, Me. After living with her friend, Deborah, for 25 years, they now live in the same apartment building. She spent two months in Maryland with Julie Kelly Miller ‘81 . Barbara “Barb” Eggert Maloney went to her brother’s house for Thanksgiving as it was her daughter’s turn to go to her husband’s family and her son was heading to Denver, Colo., with his girlfriend. Barb has three grandsons and we hope to get our grandkids together one of these years! Mary Stadler and Susan have been healthy. Mary’s school remains open; she works primarily in-person. Susan does consulting from home basically full-time. They feel fortunate to live in a beautiful place—Half Moon Bay, Calif.— where they can be outside and most people are vaccinated and wearing masks indoors. Mary Grace Sylvester traveled from Tokyo to Sylvania, Ohio in September. Susan Finley and husband Mike drove in from Cleveland, Ohio, for a reunion. Mary Grace often catches up over coffee or lunch in Tokyo with Mary Blaber’77 . Hey, Mary! Mary Melanie “Mel” Waller, MD , is overjoyed as a grandmother. Boden Sandven arrived March 7, 2021 in Fargo to daughter Kristen. A preemie, he spent 55 days in the NICU, but is healthy. Mel still practices Urology. She chats with Cynthia “Cindy” Ackil , reminding us, “Our Woods friendships are truly a treasure!” Anne Walsh Walton’s daughter, Anne Walton Keller, was elected Judge of Shaker Heights, Ohio Municipal Court in November 2021. Anne enjoyed an escape to Lake Worth Beach, Fla., during a cold snap in Cleveland, Ohio. Mary Frances Cebuhar West continues her career in commercial real estate in Orlando, Fla., with retirement on the horizon. Her son, Matthew, is now in Philadelphia with LinkedIn and travels weekly to New York City. Philomena “Peggy” Bowling Zitzer’s daughter, Ellen, got engaged on the Notre Dame football field in December! Between teaching Special Ed students in Chicago Public Schools, Peggy is planning the wedding. A big THANK YOU to Peggy for stepping up and serving as our Class Agent. Supporting her efforts is appreciated! Kevin and I get to Chicagoland to visit grandson, Liam, and his parents. Our younger son is in Ukrainian Village in the city. I rarely see Chicago Woodsies because we can’t tear ourselves away from our family!
